General Experience
I work with independent authors and publishers to create back-of-the-book and embedded indexes. I am also a Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP)/Publishing Training Centre (PTC)–qualified copyeditor, proofreader and developmental editor.
As a qualified teacher, I have an extensive professional background in education and academia, specialising in languages, English, the humanities and social sciences.
I am a proofreader for the Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People BATOD Magazine and am currently compiling a continuous index for the publication.
Subjects
I am a qualified teacher and specialise in modern languages and linguistics, British Sign Language (BSL), deaf education and other special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) including ADHD, ASD, dyslexia, and syndromes such as CHARGE. I have also taught English as a second language in Austria, Germany, Sweden and Australia. I have home educated and tutored children up to GCSE level; subjects include art and design, biology, chemistry, English, French, geography, German, history, mathematics, music, physics, Portuguese, psychology, religious studies, Spanish and statistics.
For my Pre-qualification indexing assignment (PIA), I compiled an index for Philip Dixon, Testing Times: Success, Failure and Fiasco in Welsh Education Policy since Devolution.
I am currently working on a cumulative index for the BATOD Magazine.
I hold a BA (Hons) in French and German (with Spanish and Swedish), and Signature Level 6 in BSL. I am also fluent in Portuguese and am a Welsh language learner. I was also a contributor to the international Multilingual Dictionary of Basic Indexing Terms (Portuguese, English and French entries), which can be found at The Indexer.
I have a lifelong interest in art and design. I am a calligrapher and have completed courses in Copperplate, French Roundhand, Engrosser’s Script, Gothic, Italic, Modern Calligraphy, Textura and Uncial. I am currently compiling indexes to historic manuscripts on calligraphy. I am a keen artist, especially in watercolour, gouache and coloured pencil, and am a member of the Society of All Artists (SAA). I am also interested in photography in which I have a City & Guilds Level 2 qualification.
I have an A level in history and have studied modern and contemporary European history as part of my BA (Hons) Modern Languages degree. Areas of study include: German history – Imperial and Nazi Germany, the German Democratic Republic and the Cold War, and German philosophers; French history – the French Revolution, the French Resistance and Americanism in France; Russian history; art history, and the history of medicine. I am also interested in religious history, ancient civilisations such as the Sumerians and myths and legends in history.
I have travelled extensively around Europe, Southeast Asia, Australasia, Fiji and the United States. I also lived and worked for several years in Portugal, Austria, Germany, France, Sweden and Australia.
I have a lifelong interest in complementary and alternative medicine practices, and natural therapies. I am a qualified Reiki Master and have also followed courses in herbalism, aromatherapy, Indian head massage, colour therapy and crystal healing.
I have read widely and taken several courses on wellbeing, self-help and personal development. These include meditative and spiritual practices and CBT.
I have taught Psychology to GCSE level. I have studied child development in detail (Piaget, Vygotsky, etc) as part of my postgraduate teaching qualifications. I am particularly interested in children’s mental health, especially in relation to neurodiverse conditions such as autism and ADHD, and chronic conditions such as type 1 diabetes.
I have a lifelong interest in food and drink and have taken courses in French cuisine and barista training. I am particularly interested in nutrition related to autoimmune conditions such as type 1 diabetes, coeliac and multiple sclerosis and also in sports nutrition.
I studied geography, history and psychology (including child development) extensively as part of my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees; I have also taught all of these to GCSE level. I am especially passionate about disability issues and rights, especially in equality for deaf people and people with neurodiverse conditions such as ASD and ADHD.
As part of my postgraduate teaching qualifications, I studied children’s mental health, especially in relation to deafness, SEND, neurodiverse conditions such as autism and ADHD, and chronic conditions such as type 1 diabetes.
I have a lifelong interest in music, and I play the violin and flute to Grade VI/VII respectively, the recorder and I am learning to play the alto saxophone.
I studied contemporary philosophy as part of my undergraduate degree, including German philosophers such as Heidegger, Marx, Freud and Hegel, and Existentialism in France.
I have taught Religious Studies and history up to GCSE level. I have also worked as a proofreader on several dissertations and theses related to theology. I am particularly interested in Eastern religions such as Buddhism and Taoism.
I am interested in sports and have played netball and hockey to county level. I am interested in martial arts and have practised tai chi for several years. I also volunteer as a swimming official for Swim Wales.
I have always been interested in meditative and spiritual practices and am a qualified Reiki Master. I am also interested in Eastern religions such as Buddhism and Taoism.
I am interested psychic and divination practices, and I have followed several courses on psychic development and mediumship, reiki, dowsing, astrology, and tarot cards.
I volunteer as a patient and public involvement (PPI) representative for medical research into type 1 diabetes, and I am currently involved in two research trials with Cardiff and Swansea Universities. I have also been a volunteer and Committee Member for the National Autistic Society (NAS), and I have taken part in fundraising for the NAS, JDRF and Diabetes UK.
I have a particular interest in aetiology. I have done postgraduate study in deafness and audiology, and I am part of research studies into type 1 diabetes. I am interested in best practices for management of chronic conditions, including nutrition and exercise, supplements and technology. I am also a PPI representative (currently with Cardiff and Swansea Universities) for medical research into type 1 diabetes.
I have a lifelong interest in cinema and film. I also studied both French and German cinema as part of my undergraduate degree, including French New Wave (Godard, Truffaut, etc) and New German Cinema (Fassbinder, Herzog, etc).
I have taught both English Literature and Language to GCSE level, including Shakespearean texts, poetry and contemporary literature.
I have taught mythology and folklore related to ancient civilisations, such as the ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Romans, and Norse mythology. I am particularly interested in Celtic mythology, especially related to Wales.
I have a BA (Hons) and am fluent in French and German and am also fluent in Portuguese. I would be happy to index in these languages.
I am a keen gardener and have a lifelong interest in horticulture, especially in growing herbs for medicinal purposes. I have been a member of the National Botanic Garden of Wales for several years.
I have always been interested in martial arts and have practised tai chi for several years. I have also taken classes in karate and aikido.

I am a qualified copyeditor (CIEP/PTC) and non-fiction developmental editor, and I specialise in academic and educational materials. Translation
I am fluent in French, German and Portuguese and have done some translation work from these languages into English. I also have the Signature Level 6 in BSL and have done some interpreting as a QToD.
