The East Midlands group has been meeting irregularly at various locations and welcomes members from a wide area, including Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. After a couple of years of inactivity it has been reinvigorated thanks to the efforts of its new group leader, and meetings are generally held in Leicester. Contact John Silvester for further information.
The East Midlands group runs an email discussion forum that is open to all members of the Society.
Forthcoming meetings
Information will be posted here in due course once the lockdown restrictions have been lifted. In the meantime, keep in touch with other indexers via SIdeline and the group forums. Don’t forget you can participate in discussions on any of the local group forums.
Past meetings
Monday 16 March 2020 at 12.30 p.m. at Phoenix Arts Centre cafe, 4 Midland Street, Leicester LE1 1TG
Our usual wide-ranging index-related discussion over lunch was cancelled due to the Covid-19 situation.
Tuesday 22 October 2019 at 12.30 p.m. at Phoenix Arts Centre cafe, 4 Midland Street, Leicester LE1 1TG
Five of us met at the Phoenix Arts Centre cafe/bar, which we have agreed is an ideal location for a relaxed indexing-related chat over lunch (and with a wide range of food and drink options available).
Wednesday 5 June 2019 at 12.30 p.m. at New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, 53 New Walk, Leicester LE1 7EA
Indexing-related discussion over lunch. Once again, there was no fixed agenda for the six of us present. Everyone seemed happy to talk generally and exchange experiences, and one indexing topic seemed to feed seamlessly into another. It’s amazing how many matters touching on indexing can arise from this kind of free discussion. On this occasion, we ranged from the use of indexing standards, current indexing software, through to whether indexers had a duty to report grammatical errors found in PDF files.
Thursday 14 March 2019 at 12.30 p.m. at Phoenix Arts Centre cafe, 4 Midland Street, Leicester LE1 1TG
The Phoenix Arts Centre cafe/bar proved to be an ideal location for a relaxed indexing-related chat over lunch. Five of us, ranging from almost-retired to newly qualified, enjoyed the good food and discussion ranged widely, covering, amongst other issues, computer replacement, taxation, marketing, CPD, repagination and (inevitably) unreasonable client demands. We agreed that Leicester is convenient for everyone and that we would try the museum next time.
Thursday 15 November 2018 at 12 p.m
The reconstituted group held a successful first meeting in the cafe of John Lewis in Nottingham on 15 November, when four people were in attendance. In addition to discussing a range of indexing-related issues, it was agreed that Leicester would be a more convenient location for the next meeting in March 2019.
