Human Indexing in a Digital World. Society of Indexers online conference 2024 18th-19th September

The Society of Indexers’ 2024 online conference, ‘Human Indexing in a Digital World’ took place via Zoom on Wednesday 18th to Thursday 19th September, with over 80 participants registered. The programme offered something for everyone, whatever stage in their indexing career, and can be found here.

The conference main sessions and presenters were:

  • AI (artificial intelligence) tools in publishing and implications for indexing
    George Walkley and Tanya Izzard
  • Software current states of play of the main dedicated indexing programs
    Pierke Bosschieter and Stephen Ullstrom
  • The Frankfurt Kabuff as creative publishing critique and its unusual index
    Beth Driscoll, Claire Squires and Paula Clarke Bain
  • Wikipedians: improving online information about indexing
    Mary Coe and other indexer–Wikipedians

Participants were able to select two parallel breakout discussion sessions. These covered:

  • client relations
  • embedded indexing
  • multi-author works
  • peer review
  • students and new professionals forum
  • and time for free chat with indexing colleagues

The rate for the two-day conference was a very modest £50 for SI, ICRIS and CIEP members (and £60 for non-members), which included access to recordings of the presentations for 12 months.

Looking ahead, the 2025 SI Conference will be an in-person event from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st September at Edgbaston Park Hotel and Conference Centre at the University of Birmingham. More details here.
